Cloud and Aerith is one ill-fated video game couple that truly touched us by her cruel death by the hands of Sephiroth after venturing into the Forgotten City alone which is upsetting because of her burgeoning romance with Cloud.
Although, Cloud later falls in love with his childhood friend Tifa, but it only somewhat lessens the heartbreaking of Aeris’ shocking murder.
Link and Princess Zelda– ‘The Legend of Zelda’ series- Nintendo
Link and Princess Zelda in the ‘Legend of Zelda’ series is a rival couple to Mario and Princess Peach. For more than three decades, Link has been bravely trying to save the damsel in distress from the desert brigand Ganon.
While there have been changes throughout the series in terms of character design, storylines and even Zelda’s identity, their love has remained unchanged.
Dom and Maria- ‘Gears of War 2’
The Gears of War series contains one of the most heart-wrenching love stories ever, in which Dom finally found his missing wife Maria being in a Locust cell, but discovered that she’s been tortured, starved, and disfigured. So, he decides to let his wife go. But, it gets worse. After Maria’s death, Dom willingly sacrifices himself to save Delta-One after they’re pinned down by opposing forces.
Wander and Mono- ‘Shadow of the Colossus’- Sony Computer Entertainment
In ‘Shadow of the Colossus,’ protagonist Wander fight against 16 giant monsters to save the life of a beautiful maiden named Mono, dooming himself in the process.
He is manipulated by “Dormin,” an imprisoned evil get freed if someone kills the colossi. After he slays the evil, Wander himself was killed, then his body is possessed by the evil and transformed into a nightmarish colossus, which is sucked into a magic well.
There is a redemption for Wander’s sins after Mono awakens, she discovers an infant child with tiny horns on its head, which symbolize the rebirth of Wander. Mono, however, will forever be blissfully unaware of the terrible sacrifice he made for her life. As couples go, these two definitely should have had a happier ending.
