How to Survive Your First Night in Minecraft (Part 3)

Make Torches in Minecraft

You should make some torches to light up your home using some coal and sticks. Lucky if you have already got some.

But, if you didn’t find coal, you must make Charcoal. Whilst digging, you should find at least 8 blocks of Cobblestone. If not, dig until you collect enough.

Make a Furnace

Place the furnace somewhere convenient, then right-click on it to open interface and place 3 blocks of Wood in the section Ingredients and 2 Wooden Planks in the “Fuel” slot.

By then, you should see flames, and the Wood will be turned into Charcoal. Use the Charcoal to make torches.

Light Up The Room

Holding your torches, right-click to place them on your floor or wall to light up your home at all times – no corner should be more than 6 blocks from a lit-torch.

Shut The Door

The last thing to do is building a door to keep monsters out by using 6 wooden planks and lay them out on the crafting table. Then place the door by right clicking on the doorway of the house. It is now a safe refuge for you to survive the night, and you are ready to get started on some home improvements.

Home Improvements

You should use any remaining daylight to collect more wood, coal, and other resources so that when it’s dark, you can expand your new home, and maybe build some new rooms.

Upgrade Your Tools

Use your Crafting Table, you can make better tools using Cobblestone instead of Wood Planks

Make Windows to see the outside world in the morning.

If you have some sand, you can make a window by using your furnace to make sand into glass. Then, you can use a glass block as a window, to make proper window-panes.

If you don’t have any glass, use a single block hole to make a window. It’s small so that monsters won’t get through.

Tip: Make sure you light your home by placing plenty of torches, otherwise monsters may enter! A good tip is that no square of your floor should be more than 6 blocks away from a torch.

How to Survive Your First Night in Minecraft (Part 2)

Wooden Pickaxe

This is your first tool,to dig, chop down trees or kill animals. You could also make other wooden tools such as axe, shovel or sword, but there’s not much sense since you want to move on to make stone tools and better as soon as possible.

You can break down crafting table to bring it along, by whacking it with the pickaxe. Or you can make a new one when needed.

Scouting a location

Quickly find a suitable place to build your first home. Start by digging an underground home which might looks like a hobbit hole. An ideal home would be the side of a hill or cliff face. Don’t go too far from the site where you first spawned; if you die you can come back to that location, and be able to find your house again!

Take a minute or two to find an ideal spot; while you’re on the way, look out for the following:

Coal veins: coal is a black mineral that you might find exposed on a rock face. Use your pickaxe to get it.

Sand: if you dig up a few blocks of sand, you will be able to use it to make glass windows.

Sheep: if you see three or more sheep, you can kill them to get the 3 blocks of Wool for making a bed.

Wood: make sure you have several extra pieces of wood that you are not converted into planks.

Build a home

With your pickaxe, begin digging a new home. The doorway should be 2 blocks high and 1 block wide, looking into a larger space inside.

Making a start on home

Don’t do too much at first: as soon as you have a bit of space inside, you can start by doing some crafting such as table.
