How to Survive Your First Night in Minecraft (Part 1)

Assuming you begin on a daybreak, you have 15 minutes to gather all the resources you need. Begin by scouting out the area; you will need to punch trees for wood, and you would really like to look for some coal and some sheep. Keep an eye out for everything.

Step 1: Punch a Tree

The first thing you’ll need to get is wood. Find a tree, and punch it (by pressing the left mouse button) until a chunk of wood comes off. Repeat the action until you have gathered all the wood from the tree. You should have 3 – 5 blocks of wood.

The next step is to make some of the things you’ll need. First thing first, let’s start with converting the wood you just harvested into wooden planks.

Inventory – Press ‘E’ to open your inventory menu.

Try to move items around on your inventory by left-click the mouse to pick up your whole stack of wood then right-click on any square to put a single item into place, or you can also left-click to drop the whole stack. 

Crafting planks – Try to convert a few blocks of wood to Wooden Planks or crafting a table

You must use 4 Wooden Planks to create a Crafting Table. 

Place the Crafting Table in your Toolbar, and click ‘E’ to close your inventory. Pick up the Crafting Table by pressing keys 1–9 (or use a scroll wheel) then right-click to place it on the floor. Then right click on the table, until  another screen with your inventory and a crafting area open up; this time the crafting area should be a 3×3 square.

To Crafting Table Interface – Placing two planks on the Crafting Table, one above the other, to get some sticks. Then, use sticks and planks to create a Wooden Pickaxe.
